Fils d’hôtelier, Michael Powell s’intéresse au cinéma à partir de 1922 et devient l’assistant de Rex Ingram en 1925. Il apprend le métier en devenant photographe de plateau (Champagne d’A. Hitchcock) puis monteur (Chantage) et scénariste (Perfect Understanding de Cyril Gardner).

Il passe à la réalisation au moment de la prolifération des « Quotas Quickies », films courts à petits budgets destinés à faire barrage à l’invasion des productions américaines. Il en réalise vingt-trois. Par l’intermédiaire d’Alexander Korda, il rencontre le scénariste Emeric Pressburger avec qui il travaillera pendant quinze ans et avec qui il fondera la société de production The Archers.

À travers son importante filmographie, il a touché à des genres aussi divers que le fantastique, l’épouvante, le film de guerre, ou la comédie musicale.
