Vers 1930, en Arkansas, Bertha assiste à la mort accidentelle de son père, provoquée par l’inconscience d’un employeur tyrannique. Seule dans la vie, Bertha erre de ville en ville en compagnie d’autres marginaux : un syndicaliste révolté, un noir, un juif déraciné. Ce groupe constitue bientôt un gang qui va devenir célèbre.
